The 3R Method™

Downsizing is more than moving to a smaller home.

The 3R Method™ is a practical and compassionate framework for navigating the decisions, emotions and logistics of downsizing — from the first thoughts about change through settling into your next chapter.

Reflect. Relocate. Rejoice. Three connected phases designed to help you move forward with clarity rather than chaos.

01

Reflect

Clarify what matters before acting.

02

Relocate

Plan your move with calm and confidence.

03

Rejoice

Settle in and create a life that fits you now.

Why I Created the 3R Method™

I realized the house was only part of the problem.

I created the 3R Method after going through the downsizing journey with my parents.

By that point, I had already helped clients successfully downsize. I understood the practical side of the process — preparing and staging a home, guiding the sale and helping find a new home that fit the next stage of life.

But going through it with my own family showed me just how much more was involved.

There was the emotional weight of leaving a home filled with decades of memories. There was the sheer number of decisions. There were family dynamics, unspoken feelings and the difficulty of letting go of things that represented important parts of a family's history.

What I Learned

Downsizing isn't just about what happens to the house.

It's also about identity, autonomy, relationships, memories and the life you're moving toward. The real-estate transaction is only one part of a much larger transition.

That experience led me to create a more thoughtful way to approach downsizing — one designed to help people not simply move, but move forward.

More Than a Real Estate Process

Downsizing affects more than your home.

A downsizing decision can touch almost every part of your life. The 3R Method brings those pieces into the same conversation so you can make decisions with the whole transition in mind.

01

Your Home

Where you live may need to change — but the right next home is about more than square footage. It should support the way you want to live now and in the years ahead.

02

Your Belongings

Years in one home can mean accumulated possessions, family treasures and memories. Deciding what comes with you can be both practical and deeply personal.

03

Your Finances

The move can involve the value of your current home, the cost of your next home, preparation, moving expenses and the financial realities of the life you're planning.

04

Your Relationships

Spouses, partners, adult children and other family members may all have perspectives, concerns or expectations. Those conversations can be an important part of the process.

05

Your Sense of Home

A longtime home can be closely connected to identity, memories and independence. Leaving it can involve emotions that aren't solved by a moving checklist.

06

Your Next Chapter

Ultimately, the goal isn't simply to leave one house. It's to make thoughtful decisions about the life, home and routines you want to create next.

That's why the 3R Method looks at the whole transition — not just the real estate transaction.

01 — REFLECT

Start with what matters.

Before deciding what to pack, donate or let go, take time to understand what you want your next chapter to look and feel like.

Phase One

Don't start with the stuff. Start with the why.

Downsizing can quickly become overwhelming when the first thing you do is start sorting possessions. Reflect takes a different approach: pause before acting and get clear about what matters, what is changing and what you want your next home and life to support.

1

What do I want to keep?

Not just objects. Think about the routines, relationships, memories, feelings and meaning you want to carry forward.

2

What do I want to change?

What is no longer working in your current home or life? What would you like to make easier, simpler or more enjoyable?

3

What will I need in my next home?

Look beyond features and square footage. Think about function, support, accessibility, routines, peace and the way you want to live.

Reflect isn't about having all the answers. It's about creating enough clarity to make the decisions that come next with intention rather than pressure.

Phase Two — Relocate

Turn your plan into a manageable transition.

Once you understand what you're moving toward, the practical work can begin. Relocate brings the different pieces of the move together and breaks them into steps you can actually manage.

01

Prepare the current home

Determine what actually needs to be done before selling. That may include decluttering, repairs, cleaning, staging, photography and other preparation — but the goal is thoughtful preparation, not making the house perfect.

02

Decide what comes with you

Sorting belongings can feel enormous when you've lived somewhere for decades. Break it into manageable decisions and focus on what truly belongs in the life and home you're creating next.

03

Find the right next home

The next home should reflect the priorities you identified during Reflect. Think about location, lifestyle, accessibility, maintenance, finances and the way you want to live — not simply how many rooms you have.

04

Coordinate the transition

A downsizing move can involve a sale, a purchase, movers, belongings, timing and many smaller details. Keeping those pieces connected helps you move from one home to the next without treating every decision as a separate problem.

You don't have to do everything at once. The goal is calm progress — one manageable step at a time — rather than trying to solve the entire move in a single weekend.

Phase Three — Rejoice

A new address is not the same thing as feeling at home.

The move may be complete, but the transition isn't necessarily finished. Rejoice is about giving yourself time to adjust, rebuild your routines and discover what feels good about the life you've created next.

01

Give yourself time

You may feel relief, pride, grief, uncertainty — or several of those things at once. None of that means you've made the wrong decision. You're adjusting to a significant change.

02

Rebuild your routines

Familiar routines can make a new place begin to feel like home. Notice what works, establish new rhythms and give yourself permission to find your way around a different space.

03

Notice what you're gaining

Less maintenance, a better location, more manageable space, new connections or simply more time can all become part of the life you're creating. Give yourself permission to notice those things.

Rejoicing isn't about pretending everything is perfect.

It's about noticing the good — slowly, quietly and honestly — and allowing yourself to feel at home again. The goal isn't simply to complete a move. It's to create space for a life that fits where you're going.

3R in Practice

A framework is more useful when you can actually use it.

The 3R Method is supported by practical tools that break a complicated transition into smaller, more manageable decisions. Use them when you need them — without adding more pressure to the process.

Small steps, not everything at once

The tools are there to support the process, not add pressure. Use what is useful, when it is useful, and keep moving forward one thoughtful step at a time.

The 3R Method brings the emotional and practical sides of downsizing into the same process — with tools to help you move from thinking, to planning, to living what comes next.
