5 Simple Ways to Pet-Proof Your Luxury Home

Most Canadians agree that it just wouldn’t be a home without a beloved pet curled up at your feet or snuffling around the kitchen as you prepare dinner. If the thought of a pet getting into trouble in your new luxury home makes you wince, however, you’re not alone. Follow these tips to keep your fluffy friends safe and your new home protected.
Buy pet-friendly plants. Did you know that some common houseplants can actually make your pet sick? Some of these include aloe vera, ivy and other trailing vines. When you’re setting up greenery, make sure you research to find some pet-friendly variants, or keep your plants out of reach.
Be mindful of cords and outlets. Cords are just one of those things that attract playful pets. Make sure they’re either out of reach or snugly contained to avoid hazards.
Use baby gates for out-of-bounds areas. Have a section of your luxury home that’s out-of-bounds? Consider using a baby gate if your pet is unsupervised. This also works for blocking off staircases if you have a small or senior pet that struggles to navigate stairs.
Hide food. If there is food out, pets will find it. Make sure you put food away as soon as you’re finished with it. If you keep snacks in your purse or gym bag, take care not to leave it in the hallway or mudroom, where a sneaky pet might find it.
Invest in a no-chew spray. If you have a really diligent chewer and you’re concerned about things like furniture or shoes, consider buying a no-chew spray. These are formulated to discourage pets from chewing or licking things, without being toxic or harmful to your pet.
